Motivated to be Evangelistic?

I think I’m done preaching sermons designed to motivate people to be evangelistic. Evangelism that has to be forced or coerced is no evangelism at all. Evangelism is the joyous announcement of the good news of Jesus Christ. To the degree that the gospel is real to us, the more evangelistic we will be. Rather than guilt-tripping or arm-twisting nonevangelizing Christians into sharing the gospel with their neighbor–or else, I’m going to make sure they understand the gospel and are putting themselves into position through the various spiritual disciplines to experience its truth and have their lives changed by it. When this is happening, evangelism happens. Could it be that we aren’t sharing the gospel with our neighbors and telling them what a difference God will make in their lives because quite honestly, he hasn’t made that much of a difference in ours? Are we asking folks in our churches to act like travel agents who hand out brochures to destinations they’ve never visited?

If we concentrate on obeying the two greatest commands of the law–loving God with everything we’ve got and loving our neighbors as we love ourselves–then evangelism should be the simple, and quite natural, act of introducing the neighbors we love to the God we love.

Evidence for Jesus

Archeological evidence of Jesus?

While this is incredibly interesting, I’m not sure what it proves. Even the most liberal of mainstream scholars, the hardhead cited in the article excluded, concede there once was a guy named Jesus, out of whom the movement we know as Christianity sprang. Maybe he deceived everyone. Maybe he was a wise guy whose overzealous disciples exaggerated his exploits and invented a new religion in the process. Or maybe he was actually the long awaited Messiah of Israel who was crucified and raised from the dead. There are still many things that can be debated about the “historical” Jesus–if you want to burn your calories doing such things–but one thing in New Testament Studies that is no longer up for debate is the existence of a man named Jesus who lived in the first century and left his mark on the rest of history. Next question please. . .

Brennan Manning on Humility

Humble men and women do not have a low opinion of themselves, they have no opinion of themselves. The heart of humility lies in undivided attention to God, a fascination with his beauty revealed in creation, a contemplative presence to each person who speaks to us, and a “de-selfing” of our plans, projects, ambitions, and soul. Humility is manifested in an indifference to our intellectual, emotional, and physical well-being and a carefree disregard of the image we present.
