Former Spur David Robinson to become man of the cloth

By The Associated Press
(9/22/03 - SAN ANTONIO) David Robinson, who retired from the San Antonio Spurs after the 2002-03 championship season, will reportedly become a minister at his longtime church.

Max Lucado, pastor at Oak Hills Church, told worshippers Sunday that Robinson will be joining the church’s staff as a “minister at large,” with duties yet to be determined.

Lucado went on to say that he and Robinson may teach a weekly Bible study together.

The announcement was made in the church’s vast worship area, which doubles as a basketball court.

“He is a great teacher and a great builder,” Lucado told the San Antonio Express-News in Monday’s editions.

Robinson, who retired in June after 14 NBA seasons, could not be reached for comment.

During the Spurs’ title run, Robinson had said several times that he was considering ministry after his retirement.

He also said he planned to devote much of his time to fund-raising for the Carver Academy, a private elementary school in a struggling inner-city neighborhood that he founded and endowed with nearly $10 million of his own money.
