I Love the Olympics

The men’s relay last night was one of the best races I’ve ever seen. I’m sitting in my living room in Catoosa, Oklahoma screaming as if I’m there in China. That is why we watch the Olympics.

Speaking of the Olympics, I’d like to qualify for the 2012 games, but I’m not sure which sport would be the best for me. I lack speed, strength, and skill, but I’m a hard worker. Any suggestions?

Hard to Spin

Last week, while at church camp, Caleb (age 7) was asked in a small group what character in the Bible he’d most like to be.

His response: Peter.

When asked why, he said, “Because he got to cut a guy’s ear off.”

I’m not sure how I can spin this positively except to say:

1. The kid knows his Bible.
2. At least he didn’t say Anakin Skywalker.

Good Reads

Here are several books I’ve just read or am about to finish.

1. What Would Jesus Deconstruct? I loved this book. Caputo is sharp, funny, and able to explain deconstruction in a constructive way.

2. The Reason for God. This is a great book for me to read. I’m a doubter and every so often I need to read a book like this to help me doubt my doubts.

3. The Fidelity of Betrayal. I think Peter Rollins is a brilliant writer, thinker, and storyteller. If you loved How (Not) to Speak of God, you will love this as well. If you hated it, then you’ll hate this one even more. His discussion of Judas as one who faithfully betrays Jesus will either set your wheels to spinning or cause you to skid off the road.

Back in the Pool

After a nice July full of down time on multiple fronts, it’s time to start blogging again.

In July we went to Austin to see my family and then on to Gulf Shores, Alabama for some beach time. On the way, we ate Prejeans, one of my favorite restaurants of all time. Heather has some vacation pics up at her blog.

I also spent several days in Abilene where I preached at the Highland Church and then sought wisdom from Randy Harris.

I read lots of books with no footnotes, but full of guns, spies, and mysteries. I took four consecutive Sundays off at Garnett. It was great to have a break from writing new content. I was able to get some important behind-the-scenes admin work done as well.

I’ll tell you all what I told Garnett yesterday. It’s good to be back.
