For years, the Christian community has been intrigued by the goggled one’s spiritual leanings. Early on U2 was classified as a Christian band who played rock, at least according to Behind the Music. Then things got muddled a bit as they experienced the rush of success and experimented with reinventing their already reinvented selves. Since then, many in the evangelical community, at least the cool evangelicals, have been wanting to know if its still kosher to think of Bono as a Christian. Well, according to something I just read in Christianity Today he has finally given an answer to the question: yes, Virginia, he does believe in Jesus.
Some I know still won’t be satisfied by this admission. After all, Bono still drops F-bombs into a microphone on occasion. If he’s going to tell people he believes in Christ, then he really shouldn’t do that (say f— into a microphone, that is). I’m not about to say whether he’s really in or out. He says he believes. That’s enough for me. One thing I’ve noticed–Bono has translated his belief in Jesus into the kind of social action on behalf of the poor and downtrodden in Africa that puts most American evangelicals, especially the question asking kind, to shame. What if while we were trying to figure out if he was a Christian or not, Bono was reading his Bible and learning how to put his faith into action?
