81?!

Kobe’s 81 points last night is more significant and impressive than Wilt’s 100. Wilt was a man among boys. No telling how many of his points came off of dunks. Kobe’s points were scored from all over the court. Unbelievable.

  1. Sorry bro, gotta disagree. Kobe plays in a watered down league (31 teams versus 12 at Wilt’s time), add to that the fact that he scored 21 points from 3’s (something not in existence during the time of Wilt), and the fact that Kobe was playing what could be conidered the only minor league NBA team in the league this year in the Raptors (Ranked 28th in the league in defense).

Impressive? sure. more significant, not by a long shot. Incredibly believible in the fact that no one else on the Lakers can porduce consistent offense.

But, Jack Bauer is the man!

Just a heads up, it won’t matter in the West once the Suns get Amare back, just give them the trophy now!

  2. Kobe Schmobe! Yeah, but he’s not all that!

  3. This is the argument my brother and I always have. He loves Kobe and I don’t. Kobe single-handly brought his team back in a game where they were losing by as much as 15 points at one time. But unless he changes his game to include more of his teammates then he will always live in Shaq’s shadow. Personally does he have the talent to be the best. Yes, but then again he might not have the mind.

In regards to wilt I will make this statement. He might be one of the most underrated athletes of all time. He probably should have done the Decathlon in the 1960 Olympics. I watched him stop a fight once between two NBA players by literally picking them up off the ground with his arms extended. I watched him dig a ball out of the ground in a volleyball match, pop up and then spike it in a matter of seconds. And his sweet passes to McMillan and Hairston help the Lakers when a world championship. He is also the only center to lead the league in assist. He jumped 6’6″ in the 1958 Big Eight Championships. He was a behemoth. He was bigger then live and could have played basketball at age 50.

  4. It’s called “ball hog”, it’s selfish, and it’s an insult to any team sport. Any guy who shoots every time his team comes down the court is going to score a lot. Big deal. Why aren’t they in first? And many times when Kobe goes off for a lot of points, they end up losing. In my neighborhood, his nickname would be the “black hole”, when the ball goes into him, you never see it again.

Not interested in the Kobe train.

  5. I don’t like Kobe, but I think this was more impressive. The NBA wasn’t as diluted, but even the Raptors have taller, longer, probably more athletic defenders than any team had back then. And playing as a big man myself, I’m betting Wilt didn’t have to move much for most of those shots as he collected 100. Kobe had to create his shots over taller players, and move all over the court on most possessions. Wilt was a far better basketball player in terms of helping his team win, but on the performance scale, I have to give the nod to Kobe.

I’m amused that both performances included 2 assists. Do you think Wilt and Kobe were trying to give someone else a chance, or that a “selfish” teammate just didn’t give the ball back like they were supposed to?

  6. Yeah – I certainly agree on that 3 point issue. Wilt would have been draining those granny-toss,under-handed 3’s all night long back in the day. Please gang! Wilt camped out under the basket for days on end and made 1′ scoop shots over some poor 6’7″ white guy named Norm for 48 minutes. I’m no huge Kobe fan – but his game is unstoppable right now.

  7. You guys need to be nice Derral Imhoff was a 6’10” white guy that had a good career he only fouled out in about 22 minutes in that game. Even later in his career when the centers got taller and better Wilt had what a 24 pt. 9 assist 23 rebound average for a season.

  8. I agree with you that it’s an impressive feat but you have to ask yourself where the Raptors were. They obviously weren’t on the court. I heard they were slapping Kobe on the rear while the game was going on. That’s embarrassing!

  9. Wade,
Your point is right on about Wilt being a man among boys and playing close to the basket. That’s not to take away from Wilt’s tremendous athletic accomplishments. It’s just that Kobe is more like the players he’s guarded by as well as the fact that he had to shoot the ball as opposed to laying it in/dunking it.

  10. sam middlebrook says:

Here’s the thing… Somtimes, a player ona team gets “hot”, and the best and most entertaining thing for the team itself is to give that player the ball.

I remember a pick-up game where my brother Daniel and this goofy guy named Wade Hodges were both “on fire”, and were on opposing teams. Both teams just kept giving their guy the ball. Daniel would hit a three. Wade would hit a longer three. Daniel woulf hit a three longer than Wade’s, etc… I honestly don’t remember who won the game, or even who stayed “hot” the longest.

Sometimes, even in team sports, individual performances can captivate the audience, and can even captivate those on the field/court/ice, etc…

Kob’e 81 point game captivated an arena full of fans, and two teams. To me, it does look more impressive than Wilt’s performance. What man of his size is NOT going to be successful? Kobe will score 80 or more again… just wait.
