A Three-Time Failure

One of the best teachers I ever had was a three-time failure.

He taught my High School chemistry class and I remember how he explained why he was such a good chemistry teacher.

He said, “In college I had to take chemistry four times because I failed it three times. Each time I took the class I had a different teacher. Each teacher had a different way of teaching chemistry. They all had their own short cuts for solving equations and different tricks for helping us understand the complexities of the subject matter. After sitting through four different classes, I know every short-cut and trick there is and I will happily pass them on to you.”

It’s not often you hear a teacher confess to repeatedly failing the subject he’s teaching, but he was convinced his failures made him a better teacher. I think he was right.

How have your past failures made you better at what you do?
