Emusic Anyone?

I’ve really been enjoying emusic. For 9.95 a month you get to download 30 non-restricted mp3 tracks that will play on whatever type of player you have.

You can pick up some really good music from artists you’ve heard of and from some you haven’t. This is a great place to discover new music from independent labels. You can also get some good stand up comedy. Their classical music department is outstanding.

If you want to check it out sign up for their free trial or if you want to send me an email (wadehodgesATgmail.com), I’ll send you an invitation to join and I’ll get a few free tracks if you sign up.

If you do sign up, here are a few recommendations.

Explosions in the Sky: I’ve downloaded everything they have.  It’s great writing music.  Puts me in the mood every time.

The Frames:  I love this band.  They’re big in Ireland but haven’t really caught on here. I’ve downloaded almost all of their stuff too. I can listen to these guys all day long and sometimes I do.

Arcade Fire

Sinead O’Connor latest album is available. I’m listening to it right now.  It’s good.

You can get your fill of Sufjan Stevens here as well.

And don’t forget to get you some Hall and Oates.

For some good Stephen Wrightish comedy, try Demetri Martin.  They’ve also got some Jim Gaffigan and Mitch Hedberg.

If you’re already downloading from emusic, I’d love to hear your recommendations. What hidden treasures have you found?

  1. Love the Frames…Glen Hansard’s album “The Swell Season” is amazing plus it’s the soundtrack for the movie “Once” which was a great delight (he is the lead in the movie).

  2. Hey! You should check out The Weepies! They are a fantastically kept secret and an amazing band..

  3. Great choices! In addition to the aforementioned, here are a few other gems that I’ve downloaded:
Some other writing-music choices – Tristeza, The Album Leaf, God is an Astronaut, and god speed you! black emperor (yes, that’s right – a few quiet to violent, 18+ min. instrumentals ). Mum also produces some lush, unique instrumentation.
Youth Group is an Aussie secret that offers some good pop-sounding “happy music”.
Great Lake Swimmers are rising on my play list as well as Low and Red House Painters.
Some older Snow Patrol is available and I introduced my kids to Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First” thanks to emusic.
I better stop now or my shameless plug for emusic will exceed yours in fervor.
    Rock on Wade Hodges.

  4. Send over the link Wade. Hey guys, great suggestions. I’ll throw some Tristan Prettyman into the mix along with Powderfinger.

  5. Hello Wade. I’m exicited about all that is going on with you and the Kingdom in Tulsa. It would be fun to be a part of.

I’m not sure these are on Emusic but if you like music you need to check these bands out:
There is a band out of New York called “The National”, their new one is called “Boxer”.
I don’t know if you have heard of her but there’s a girl named “Rosie Thomas”, she has 4 CD’s out and they are all good. Her newest is called “These friends of mine” and it’s her Sufjan and Denison Witmer. It’s good.
I have enjoyed anything “Denison Witmer” has done as well.
A band I have enjoyed a lot that is in the vein of The Frames is “Dolorean”, their newest one is called “You can’t win”.
Another one in The Frames vein is, “The Snake, The Cross, The Crown”, their new one is called “Cotton Teeth” but both of their CD’s are good.
I have enjoyed about everything “Damien Jurado” has put out.
Oh, if your into Explosions In The Sky, I found this great band out of Austin called “This Will Destroy You”, their CD is called “Young Mountain”.
You might like the band “As Tall As Lions” their new one is self titled.
Do you remember The Normals? Well, there lead singer was Andrew Osenga and he put out a few solo cd’s there are folky and great.
Last but not least one of the best CD’s i’ve listened to in years is by the group, “Sleeping At Last” their new one is called “Keep No Score”. WOW! It’s good.

Sorry if this was too much, but I love music.

    Kelly

  6. Kelly-thanks for the playlist. Emusic has most of these. I’ve got them saved for later download as I’ve already used up this month’s allotment.

  7. Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!

  8. Hall and Oats. You just won’t let it die will you? Sheeesh.
