Telling Stories in Siberia

I’m in Siberia and things are going well. I told my first batch of stories tonight, including a 15 minute overview of the story of the bible. It is a little awkward telling stories through an interpreter, but many of the kids at this camp speak fairly good English. In fact, that is why many of them are here, to learn to speak better English. Along the way they’re also going to learn a few bible stories and build relationships with some people who are showing them the love of Christ.

The camp where we’re staying is a paradox of modern and “rustic” accomodations. Right now, music is blaring from the camp discoteque where locals have have gathered to party the night away. It has quite a sound system. At the same time, the toilets here are of the the back-in and squat over a hole in the floor variety. Apparently techno beats are a higher priority than elevated toilets.

My back went out on me while I was in the shower today. The emotional stress of international travel, the long flights, and the bumpy beds have taken their toll.

One cultural observation: there is less inhibition here when it comes to the picking of one’s nose in public. I have enthusiastically embraced this custom while in country. This is one way I’m seeking to become all things to all men for the sake of the gospel.
